I have been consistently impressed by the Tube during my first week here in London. It's absolutely spotless, consistent and requires very little thought (making it incredibly easy to get from point A to point B).
There are several different lines, all color-coded. The trains operate in a simple north/south or east/west pattern. All the large, clear signs in the stations make it pretty much impossible to get on the wrong train.
The only thing you really need to do is take a look at a Tube map (either ahead of time or at the station) to find out which direction you need to go in.
Personally, I would recommend looking at a map ahead of time (makes it easier if the station is crowded). There is a great app on the iTunes store, simply search "London Tube," and it is the first result.
This app will map out the journey for you. The best part? It works OFFLINE! WiFi is not as readily available in London as one might think; apps like this that work without an internet connection can be lifesavers. Otherwise you may find yourself getting very angry with your phone. As I learned with the coins, it never helps to get mad at inanimate objects.
Not only does this app it have it's own map,
but you can choose the station you are starting from, followed by the one you want to get to...
and it will tell you exactly what line to take, if/where you need to switch and how long the whole journey will take
If you prefer a physical map, this one from Amazon is great! I bought one before I came, and it's been a big help. It's laminated (holds its own against London rain), and folds up to the size of a credit card.
And, most importantly,
